Most cases are suitable for a member of the public to instruct a barrister directly, without a solicitor. When you first contact Siân she will advise you whether your case is appropriate. She will keep this under review and if a change of circumstances means that it is no longer suitable, she will inform you of this. You will then be able to decide whether you continue to instruct her through a solicitor. If you do need a solicitor, Siân will be able to advise you on which solicitors may be appropriate for your case.
For further information, please read the Bar Council's guidance here.
Siân will be able to:
Provide you with expert advice at any stage of the process. This can be done in person, by telephone or in writing.
Draft documents and letters for you.
Represent you at hearings or mediations.
Negotiate with the other party on your behalf.
Give advice on how to prepare the case for court hearings or for mediation.
Provide advice on any offers of settlement.
Please contact Siân or her clerks to arrange a meeting, either face to face or by telephone. Siân can then advise you whether your case is suitable to be conducted without a solicitor and can reassure you that she is the best person to represent you.
Barristers provide expert advice and representation. Even solicitors seek out their advice and instruct them to appear in court on their behalf. Barristers, being self-employed, tend to have far lower overheads than solicitors meaning they are able to charge lower fees than solicitors may be able to.
When instructing a barrister directly, you will be conducting some of the day to day case management tasks a solicitor would have been carrying out, thereby further reducing costs. Siân will be able to give support and advice on how best to carry out these functions. If you do not feel you will be able to deal with these tasks, you should consider whether it would be better to work with a solicitor to assist you. You will still be able to instruct Siân through any solicitor.
